Editorial notes | “Mulan” is a classic Henan opera known to women and children. The story* originated from the narrative poem “Mulan Ci” in the Southern and Northern Dynasties. Mulan disguised herself as a man and joined the army for her father. She has been on the battlefield for twelve years and has repeatedly made extraordinary achievements, becoming a “heroine heroine” admired by the world. “Mulan Ci” was selected as a Chinese textbook. The story of Mulan joining the army is a tragic and heroic epic, which inspires countless Chinese people to defend their homes and their country. The story has been put on stage by more than 20 types of opera, including Peking Opera, Yue Opera, Han Opera, Kunqu Opera, and Qin Opera, and is often performed unfailingly. Among them, the “Changpai” version* represented by the master of Henan opera, Chang Xiangyu, has a simple and natural whole play, and classic selections are widely sung by the folks. The legend of Mulan has also been adapted into films, TV series and other art forms. In 1998, the animated film “Mulan”, adapted by the American Disney Company, was popular worldwide and had a far-reaching influence. The picture book “Mulan” is drawn with realistic oil painting techniques. The painter draws on the artistic techniques of Western Romanticism and Neoclassicism in his creation. The work shows solid painting skills and meticulous detail description ability. Through a series of magnificent and quite classical paintings, the legendary story of the heroine Hua Mulan is well reproduced. |
